What’s Going On: 8/24 – 8/31

1.  Grass Widow w/ Blood Beach, XDS & Nature
Where:  Mississippi Studios
How Much: $12 (21+)
When:  Thursday, August 25 – 9pm
Why:  If you don’t have a ticket already, there’s a good chance you can still get one at the door, but they will go quickly.  Grass Widow is an exceptionally talented trio from San Francisco.  It’s easy to stick the post-punk label on them, but these ladies break the rules more often than they follow them.  Check them out, go to this show, and thank me later. [Editor's note: I'll thank you now -- they're great!]

Smmr Bmmr @ Plan B, 8/5 – 8/6

Smmr Bmmr 2011 ; a review by Wendy Worzalla, photos by Brenda Ubhoff

Bubblegum pop tunes from Cowabunga Babez and Peach Kelli Pop made the perfect soundtrack to the breezy, carefree summer night.  By the time Apache, Therapists and Blood Beach rocked our collective socks, the crowd was drunk on Viso, Sizzle Pie and PBR.

What’s Going On: 8/10 – 8/17

1. Old Wars
Where: The Knife Shop
How Much: $4
When: Thursday, August 11th – 9pm
Why: Current and former members of Jen Moon and The Gossip make up this post-punk power-pop duo. With Moon on bass and Kathy Mendonca on drums, the pair brings their love of the symphony and the riot grrrl scene together in the most delicious way. Look for their debut to be released this fall on Cassingle and Loving It Records.

It is impossible not to love Nashville nellies Those Darlins. They rock. They roll (literally, around the stage). Last Tuesday at Bunk Bar, they took the crowd for a ride to sweaty-town, and ground on down their country-punk ramblins from new album Screws Get Loose.
