1. Cigarette Bums, PinkSlime & Piss Test
Where: The Know
How Much: $5
When: Wednesday, June 27th – 8pm
Why: Last Wednesdays at The Know! Green Noise Records Night showcases the latest and greatest in punk and garage rock. This month Cigarette Bums (LA) will be playing lo-fi psych punk-pop tunes off their recent release, Holy Smokes!. Buzz builders PinkSlime recently added some sass and tightened up their act with Kaitie Hereford joining in on bass. Still wet behind the ears, PDX trio Piss Test kicks off the night.
2. Bass Drum of Death, DZ Deathrays, & Ghost Animal
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: $10
When: Saturday, June 30th – 9pm
Why: The last time this Oxford, Miss. duo was in town they played a killer show with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Toro Y Moi (you’re already kicking yourself in the ass, right?), and after a couple tours of Europe and Australian they’re back with their chaotically tight brand of blown-out garage rock. Tourmates, DZ Deathrays punk rock will have you thrashing all over. Get there early for fuzzy and surfy dream-pop jams from Ghost Animal.

What a way to kick off the summer—the evening began with two ripping sets from Hausu and Hurry Up, and by 11pm the room was filled with the stench of campfire and testosterone. Not quite a sold out show, it left some wiggle room for more people to filter in as the New York foursome took the stage. The energetic, heavy, punk/post-hardcore quartet opened with some crowd-pleasing tunes from 2011’s Leave Home which definitely got the fans going—specifically the male crowd (the men outnumbered the ladies in attendance 10:1), who showed their love and appreciation with a sweaty mosh pit of body slamming and beer spilling.

1. Tropical Popsicle w/ Elliot Tinsley & DJ Ikon
Where: Slabtown
How Much: $5
When: Wednesday, June 20th – 8:30pm
Why: In La Mesa, just outside the riffraff of San Diego, Tim Hines writes and records walls of guitar haze on a four track resulting in a deliciously layered garage-psych shoegaze cocktail. It may be an unusual name, but Tropical Popsicle is an usually good band. The quartet has played with notable bands like Beach Fossils, The Fresh & Onlys, White Fence, etc.
2. 2:54 w/ Widowspeak
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $10/$12
When: Friday, June 22nd – 9pm
Why: Both bands on this bill are worth the ticket price separately, and $10 measly bucks is a heck of a deal for both. 2:54 is a shoegaze duo from the UK (although performing live as a four-piece) with melodies that will captivate your soul. Currently based out of Brooklyn, Widowspeak helped open the doors on the dream-pop resurgence with their self-titled debut released on Captured Tracks.
3. The Men w/ Hurry Up & Hausu
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: $12
When: Saturday, June 23rd – 9pm
Why: Labeled as a noise/post-punk band, this Brooklyn-based quartet recently released their third full-length album, Open Your Heart, on Sacred Bones Records. After the first track, you take a step back and ask yourself, “This is The Men?” Although it opens fast and furious, the album is filled with guitar solos (see: seven minute psychedelic, “Oscillation”), surfy riffs, and a little twang.

Currently on tour with Sarah Jaffe, the Chicago five-piece made their first appearance in Portland at Mississippi Studios this past Wednesday night. After setting up their equipment and a quick soundcheck, the band eased into an opening instrumental to lure the crowd in. Tommy Evans (vocals/guitar) had a few kind words to say about our fair city, “It’s so good to be in Portland. It’s our first time here and it’s home to one of our favorite bands, The Dandy Warhols.”

Show openers, the charismatic LA-natives Stars in Stereo, started the slow build of excitement throughout the night with their up-tempo pop-rock. Lead vocalist Bec Hollcraft’s voice is clear and commanding—add that to her fiery personality and it makes her just the sort of diva who can really spice things up on stage. The crowd certainly didn’t sound disappointed, the energy in the room instantly spiking high (only really ceasing when SiS played a somewhat awkward rendition of Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer”). (more…)

Pushing the maximum capacity limits and shaking the floorboards of the Roseland Theater, Sunday night a sold-out crowd said a stirring farewell to Thrice, as their North American farewell tour made one last stop in the City of Roses.
Though the band has been adamant that this isn’t necessarily the absolute end for them, but instead a hiatus for the foreseeable future, fans of Thrice were left to the bitter-sweetness of getting to enjoy seeing a band that’s been at it for over a decade for what could possibly be the last time.

The month of May marks the first occasion of the Northwest’s festival calendar to the tune of 70+ artists at Sasquatch Music Festival. Around March it becomes hot topic in any circle. “Are you going to Sasquatch?” is common conversation starter and space filler amongst many and as the anxiety and hype slowly build, the event draws nearer.

The perfect remedy for this 60 degree weather is checking out Jujuba for free on a Tuesday night at The Goodfoot during the month of June. The 11 member band can heat things up so fast and high that the rain coming down outside will be a relief after the show. After spending a few minutes figuring out their sound and realizing how badass it is, you’ll find yourself moving in some way to the drums, bass, saxes, guitar, trumpet, trombone, and keyboards…
