Touring his new album, “Are You Serious,” Andrew Bird will perform at Portland’s Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall this Wednesday with John Grant.
If you haven’t heard, Revival Drum Shop, Portland’s purveyor of vintage and custom percussion, has reinvented itself by moving into one of the artistic spaces owned by Revolver Studios. The founders of each venture, Jose Medeles and Collin Hegna, fittingly head-up two of the most eclectic instrumental bands in town, and are coming together to celebrate their collaboration and share the stage for the the first time. Medeles creates secret agent soundtracks with cymbals and vibraphone as a part of duo 1939 Ensemble, while Collin Hegna plays homage to dusty spaghetti westerns with his band Federale. Both bands emit a somewhat dark and beguiling cinematic sound, with a focus on rhythm, meter, and experimentation. Also on the bill is brighter indie-pop band Donovan Breakwater, led by Revolver Studios co-founder Nalin Silva. Two premiere PDX companies, three bands, and a good time for drum enthusiasts and soundtrack nerds.
