Crystal Stilts @ Mississippi Studios 7/22/2012

Brooklyn-based quintet, Crystal Stilts, paid Portland a visit Sunday night at Mississippi Studios. You should already be kicking yourself for missing out on the post-punk neo-psych awesome that ensued. With heavy-hitters Blood Beach and Nucular Aminals starting the night off, you can go ahead and kick yourself a few more times.

1. Lower Dens w/ No Joy & Alan Resnick

When: Thursday, July 5th – 9pm
Why: Fresh off their European dates in support of the newly released sophomore album, Nootropics, this Baltimore dream-rock group is back in the states to finish off their summer tour. Upon their return, Montreal’s doomy shoegaze/pop four-piece, No Joy, have joined them for the remainder of the dates.

2. Rigsketball Kickoff Party!

Why: It’s back and promisingly better than ever! Grab some friends and enjoy the weather out on the patio for some basketball starting at 7pm. After you’ve wiped the sweat from your brow and rehydrated with a couple beers, enjoy the tunes of some of Portland’s best kicking off at 8:20pm. 3. East End’s Third Annual Smashed Block Party!

When: Saturday, July 7th & Sunday, July 8th
Why: You know it’s really summer when the line-up for East End’s Third Annual Smashed Block Party starts buzzing in your ears. Two days of nearly three dozen rad bands–some local, some nearby neighbors, and some from far away. You might want to go ahead and call in sick for Monday because this is going to be one hell of a shindig.

Bringing their straight up garage rock acts all the way from San Antonio are Low Times and eetsFEATS (both bands share members). Bath Party kicks it off with hip-shaking psychedelic surf rock and Still Caves will set your ears on fire with their blown out garage psych-punk.

Why: Double EP release party time excellent! Tiger House is ready to put their four-song cassette, Acid Banshee/Camel Party, in the hands of the masses. 2. PDX Pop! Now 2012 Compilation Release

Why: It’s that time of year again, and I shouldn’t have to twist your arm too hard to cough up $10 for this year’s stellar PDX Pop! Now Compilation. Featuring artists near and far: Grandparents, M. Ward, Y La Bamba, Youthbitch, Sons of Huns, Blood Beach, and thirty-five more of your favorites. Why: The New York-based trio, A Place To Bury Strangers, have been making psychedelic shoegazy space rock tunes since 2007. 1. Eternal Tapestry w/ Sun Angle & Blood Beach
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: FREE!
When: Thursday, February 16th—9pm
Why: The experimental psychedelic rock group, Eternal Tapestry, brings layers of melodic guitar improvisations alongside free and open-structured songs. Their live shows are nothing short of epic and should not be missed. Get there early for the two amazing openers Sun Angle and Blood Beach! You’re in for a treat.

2. Psychic Feline w/ Footwork & Formica Man
Where: The Know
How Much: $5
When: Friday, February 17th—9pm
Why: Although house shows seem to be their natural habitat, you can usually catch this three-piece playing shows in and around Portland. Droning and moaning psych influenced rock’n’roll will definitely have you tapping your feet and nodding to the beat. Be sure to check out Formica Man and Seattle’s Footwork!

3. And And And w/ Aan & The Blimp
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $6/$8
When: Saturday, February 18th—9pm
Why: If you’re looking for a good ol’ fashioned rock’n’roll time, this is the place to be Saturday night. All three of these local wonders will rock your collective socks off—bring a friend, bring your mom, and bring those dancin’ shoes. Bands that can’t be beat with a price to match!

1.  Grass Widow w/ Blood Beach, XDS & Nature
Where:  Mississippi Studios
How Much: $12 (21+)
When:  Thursday, August 25 – 9pm
Why:  If you don’t have a ticket already, there’s a good chance you can still get one at the door, but they will go quickly.  Grass Widow is an exceptionally talented trio from San Francisco.  It’s easy to stick the post-punk label on them, but these ladies break the rules more often than they follow them.  Check them out, go to this show, and thank me later. Smmr Bmmr @ Plan B, 8/5 – 8/6

Smmr Bmmr 2011 ; a review by Wendy Worzalla, photos by Brenda Ubhoff

Bubblegum pop tunes from Cowabunga Babez and Peach Kelli Pop made the perfect soundtrack to the breezy, carefree summer night.  By the time Apache, Therapists and Blood Beach rocked our collective socks, the crowd was drunk on Viso, Sizzle Pie and PBR.

1. PDX Bridge Festival Closing Party
Where: Crystal Ballroom & Lola’s Room
How Much: $10 – All Ages
When: Sunday, August 7th – 6pm
Why: For a measly $10 you get a near baker’s dozen of some of Portland’s finest indie bands. Featuring: Copy, Symmetry/Symmetry, Tango Alpha Tango, The Dimes, Dropa, Mnemonic Sounds, Violet Isle, and Water & Bodies just to name a few. Both venues are all ages, so grab a bunch of friends or a few random strangers and treat yourselves to an evening of great local music.
