What’s Going On: 06/12 – 06/19

1. Parquet Courts w/ Naomi Punk  & Blood Beach
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $12
When: Wednesday, June 12th – 9:00pm
Why: Although formed in 2010, this Brooklyn quartet has created a buzz-building frenzy over the last year. The up-and-coming post-punk band was named as a “band to watch” by Rolling Stone in April, and rightfully so. Along for the ride is Olympia/Seattle’s Naomi Punk with noisy guitars and crashing cymbals, and Portland’s own Blood Beach making their first 2013 appearance on stage.

2. PDX Pop Now! Compilation Release Party 2013
Where: Backspace
How Much: $5 – $8
When: Friday, June 14th – 8pm
Why: Oh boy, is it that lovely time of year again already?! Gearing up for their annual summer festival, PDX Pop Now! will celebrate the release of their 2013 compilation with performances by Sapient w/ Sean Flinn and The Royal We, Summer Cannibals, and Wishyunu. $5 gets in you in the door with a digital copy of the release, or for a few bucks more you can grab the double CD for $8.

3. Mount Kimbie w/ Holy Other, Vinyl Williams
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $16
When: Saturday, June 15th – 9pm
Why: Somewhere between hazy and hypnotic, UK Electronic Duo Mount Kimbie are one of those groups that you see live accidentally and then immediately wonder how you’re just now hearing about them for the first time. The fly-under-the-radar-types are breaking those confines and carry a thicker, dancier sound from their new album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth into the cozy downstairs lounge of the ‘Fir. They also bring the opportunity to catch UK tourmates, the up-and-comer Holy Other.

4. Burnt Ones w/ BOOM! & Jollapin Jasper
Where: Bunk Bar
How Much: $5
When: Sunday, June 16th – 9pm
Why: San Francisco psych-pop band, Burnt Ones, have releases on Burger Records, Castle Face Records, and Fuzz City Records (just to name a few)–every single one worthy of multiple listens and your hard-earned dollars. Rounding out the bill are the infectious BOOM! and Jollapin Jasper. Get there early and get ready to dance your face off!

Shout Out Louds @ Aladdin Theater 05/21/2013

Those sweet Swedes still got it. After 10+ years, numerous tours and a new record every 3 years or so, The Shout Out Louds are making sure they are not just a thing of the mid-2000’s past. Since the band’s iconic break out album Howl Howl Gaff Gaff in 2002, the band’s frenetic energy has imbued every work they have released, all stamped with their unique stream of conscious lyrics, bubbling harmonies, and expert tambourine stylings.

KPSU Kruise II 05/10/2013

KPSU rocks the boat with local-artist driven “kruises” on The Portland Spirit, in which passengers board for a party that helps to raise funds for the university station’s very own FM signal. Last Friday’s event came at the end of an 85 degree day, and a leisurely late-night cruise with a couple of Portland’s finest up-and-coming seemed an ideal way to cool down and start the weekend.

The Music Tapes @ Mission Theater 5/7/2013

Last Tuesday night a circus rolled in to McMenamin’s Mission Theater.  Calling itself The Traveling Imaginary it was a two-show stop on a tour organized by ringmaster Julian Koster to promote his band The Music Tapes newest album Mary’s Voice.

Last fall Koster, probably best known as a member of The Neutral Milk Hotel, launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund The Traveling Imaginary.  The money raised was used to purchase a custom circus tent that the band is playing shows in across the country along with games, stories, films and amusements.

People arrived in the lobby of the theater to find games set up in front of the red and white striped tent.  Julian walked around banging a pan lid with a drumstick and announcing games through an electric megaphone: “The Penny and The Bell!” “Flooded The Sailor School!” “Traditional Bag Toss!”  Most required a blindfold and winners were promised prizes after the show.

After about 45 minutes of games the tent was opened and the roughly 30 people in attendance sat on the checkered floor in front of instruments and a seven-foot tall metronome.  It was the start of a surreal swirl of music, performance art, storytelling and even a magic trick.
