KPSU Kruise II 05/10/2013

KPSU rocks the boat with local-artist driven “kruises” on The Portland Spirit, in which passengers board for a party that helps to raise funds for the university station’s very own FM signal. Last Friday’s event came at the end of an 85 degree day, and a leisurely late-night cruise with a couple of Portland’s finest up-and-coming seemed an ideal way to cool down and start the weekend.

3. KPSU Presents: The KPSU Kruise 2!

1. 13 Months of Sunshine: African Sounds Dance Party

Why:  Every month, Holocene proudly presents an eclectic evening featuring emerging African dance music from all over the world. This month they are showcasing the talented Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang. Hailing from Sierra Leone, Ahmed Janka Nabay modernized Bubu music with ancient-inspired frantically-paced electro-dance beats that will not fall deafly on your ears.

2. PDX Pop! Now 2012

When: Friday – Sunday, July 20th – 22nd
Why: It’s time for the annual free all ages weekend of delicious local talent. Put on by the hardworking and amazing volunteers of our fair city, this year is shaping up to be one for the books. 3. King Tuff w/ Jaill & The Memories

When: Monday, July 23rd – 9pm
Why: Supporting his fantastic self-titled sophomore effort on Sub Pop, King Tuff (aka Kyle Thomas) steps up his game with one of the best albums released so far this year. King Tuff’s producer, Bobby Harlow, says it best: “King Tuff should not be inspected or even listened to with critical ears. Cut your ears off. Rock & roll is meant to be blasted into your cells, penetrated, and absorbed. It’s a visceral experience.” Indeed.

1. Lower Dens w/ No Joy & Alan Resnick

Why: Fresh off their European dates in support of the newly released sophomore album, Nootropics, this Baltimore dream-rock group is back in the states to finish off their summer tour. Upon their return, Montreal’s doomy shoegaze/pop four-piece, No Joy, have joined them for the remainder of the dates.

2. Rigsketball Kickoff Party!

When: Friday, July 6th – 7pm
Why: It’s back and promisingly better than ever! Grab some friends and enjoy the weather out on the patio for some basketball starting at 7pm. After you’ve wiped the sweat from your brow and rehydrated with a couple beers, enjoy the tunes of some of Portland’s best kicking off at 8:20pm. Featuring: And And And, The No Tomorrow Boys (7” release, Animal Eyes), Grandparents, Charts, Woolen Men, Old Age, and Mojave Bird.

3. East End’s Third Annual Smashed Block Party!

When: Saturday, July 7th & Sunday, July 8th
Why: You know it’s really summer when the line-up for East End’s Third Annual Smashed Block Party starts buzzing in your ears. Two days of nearly three dozen rad bands–some local, some nearby neighbors, and some from far away. You might want to go ahead and call in sick for Monday because this is going to be one hell of a shindig.

Why: Double EP release party time excellent! Tiger House is ready to put their four-song cassette, Acid Banshee/Camel Party, in the hands of the masses. They will make you dance with their infectious hooks and energetic pop songs filled with urgency. Charts offer up Tease, a deliciously crunchy lo-fi pop’n'roll treat that will satisfy, but still leave you hungry for more.

2. PDX Pop! Now 2012 Compilation Release

Why: It’s that time of year again, and I shouldn’t have to twist your arm too hard to cough up $10 for this year’s stellar PDX Pop! Now Compilation. Featuring artists near and far: Grandparents, M. Ward, Y La Bamba, Youthbitch, Sons of Huns, Blood Beach, and thirty-five more of your favorites. The $10 includes a copy of the comp and enjoyable live performances by Sun Angle, Wild Ones, Hollywood Tans, Rose, and DJ Porsche Cayenne.

3. A Place To Bury Strangers w/ This Will Destroy You & Dusted

Why: The New York-based trio, A Place To Bury Strangers, have been making psychedelic shoegazy space rock tunes since 2007. Compared to its predecessors, the latest effort, Worship, has upped the ante. It’s explosive, visceral, and a little dark. Both new and old tunes will sound fantastic at Doug Fir. Grab your ticket now and treat your ears to a night of brutally dynamic and melodic wall of sound.

1. MFNW KICK-OFF PARTY: Gardens & Villa, Swahili & Grandparents
Where: Holocene
How Much: $10
When: Wednesday, May 30th – 8:30pm
Why: A little taste of what’s to come at MFNW this year with two of Portland’s finest local bands. Swahili’s tribal psychedelic sound, hypnotic drums, and krautrockian patterns will captivate you. Grandparents psych-pop shoegazy delicousness makes your body move without even realizing it. And then there’s Santa Barbara’s art synth-pop group Gardens & Villa, whose sweet Californian vibe will make you ache for summertime.

2. Gospel Music w/ Surfsdrugs & Fine Pets
Where: Ella St. Social Club
How Much: $5
When: Thursday, May 31st – 9pm
Why: Hailing from Jacksonville, FL, the last time we heard from Owen Holmes (aka Gospel Music and Black Kids’ bassist) was his collaboration with members of The Magnetic Fields, Camera Obscura, Vivian Girls, etc for the 2010 Duettes EP. The follow-up How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL is full of playful indie-pop tunes with friend Madeline Long providing the yin to Holmes’ yang. Show up early to catch Surfsdrugs (members of And And And/Glitter Express) and Fine Pets (members of Best Supporting Actress).

3. Crystal Fighters w/ Is Tropical & Tyler Tastemaker
Where: Wonder Ballroom
How Much: $12/$14
When: Saturday, June 2nd – 9pm
Why: If you leave this show without a stupid smile of pure unadulterated happiness and sweat-dampened clothes, you’re doing it wrong. Formed in London in 2007, the globally influenced electronic group released their debut in October of 2010 in the UK. A year and half later the dynamic, pulsating, electro dance-rock from across the pond was released in the US and has been making waves ever since. Get your ticket now and thank me later.

1. Finn Riggins (album release) w/ And And And & Grandparents

Where: Holocene
When: Thursday, April 26th – 8:30pm
Why: With a recent record store day release from Tender Loving Empire (delicious 10” red vinyl) Boise, Idaho’s energetic indie rock trio will continue their celebration this Thursday. Support from two of Portland’s finest: last year’s WW Best New Band (in case you forgot) and a future contender for the title, Grandparents.

2. House of Light w/ Sundaze & The Dead Beat
How Much: $3-$5
Where: Langano Lounge
When: Friday, April 27th – 9pm
Why: Berlin’s underground rockers, House of Light, are headlining this benefit show for Portland up and comers The Dead Beat, who unfortunately fell victim to theft of their equipment. With special guests Sundaze, come out for some killer rock/shoegaze/noise-pop tunes and help raise some dough to replace the recently stolen gear.

3. Discos Humeantes
Where: Valentine’s
How Much: Free
When: Saturday, April 28th – 9pm
Why: Currently enjoying his second visit to the Rose City this year, Jorge Páez is the man behind the fantastic psych/punk/garage label Discos Humeantes out of Oviedo, Asturias Spain. Last time around, he had all kinds of gems from Brazil to Puerto Rico, and Madrid to New York. Come check it out!

What’s Going On: 02/22 – 02/29

1. KPSU & PSPS Presents: Grandparents w/ Broken Water 
Where: Food For Thought Cafe
How Much: $5/$7
When: Thursday, February 23rd—8pm
Why: One of Portland’s finest up and coming shoegazy psych bands serves up their sound with a side of garage and krautrock. Joining them is Olympia’s Broken Water whose reverb-drenched psychedelic garage jams are second to none. Only $5 for students (with ID) and $7 for non-students. Good times are sure to be had!

2. Quasi w/ Young Prisms & Stay Calm
Where: Mississippi
How Much: $10/$12
When: Friday, February 24th—9pm
Why: This indie rock duo needs no explanation, but you’re really in for a treat with this rad line-up! San Francisco’s Young Prisms are a psych beach-pop five-piece and Stay Calm is the collaboration of Claudia Meza (Explode Into Colors), Zac Pennington (Parenthetical Girls, Xiu Xiu), and Joe Kelly (formerly of Panther and 31 Knots). Get there!

3. Hornet Leg w/ K-Tel ’79 & Hurry Up
Where: Valentine’s
How Much: Free
When: Sunday, February 26th—9pm
Why: If you haven’t seen Hornet Leg, shame on you! But really, Valentine’s is my favorite place to see this primitive rock’n’roll trio. Also on the evening’s roster is K-Tel79’ with members formerly of Best Supporting Actress and Cat Fancy! Continuing in the trio-themed evening is Hurry Up, featuring Westin Glass and Kathy Foster of The Thermals.

1.  Green Noise Records Night!

Where:  The Know

How Much:  $5

When:  Wednesday, January 25th—8pm

Why:  In case you kids didn’t know, the last Wednesday of every month DJ Ken Dirtnap takes over and features killer bands. This month includes Hornet Leg (members of Psychic Feline, Nucular Aminals, and Hooded Hags), Hey Lover, and Dad & Dad. Music ends by 11—no joke!

2.  Seapony w/ Ghost Animal

Where:  Holocene

How Much:  $7

When:  Thursday, January 26th—8:30pm

Why: One of the best things about Seapony’s twee pop sound is how well it translates live—sugary goodness that leaves you with a smile plastered on your face. You’re gonna want to get your butts there early to catch Ghost Animal playing their first show since July!

3.  Into The Woods 2nd Anniversary!

Where:  Mississippi Studios

How Much:

When:  Friday, January 27th—9pm

Why:  It’s time to celebrate the 2nd year of Portland media powerhouse Into The Woods. These talented and dedicated dudes capture intimate performances of emerging Portland acts. Come help celebrate with Nightmoves, Grandparents, and 1939 Ensemble—with special guests and new video premieres to boot!
