Why: Holy moly, are you as excited as we are for the return of television’s most underrated series of all time?! Tonight!  Banana Stand Media presents: Arrested Development Returns Party! With Tango Alpha Tango, Animal Eyes, The We Shared Milk. Just remember: there’s always music in the banana stand!

2. The Dandelyons w/ The Laurels & Miracle Falls

When: Thursday, May 9th, 2013 – 9pm
Why: Portland’s The Dandelyons team up with Miracle Falls, project from ex – Mercury Rev / Sparklehorse / Longwave member Paul Dillon, for a night with Australia’s The Laurels (fresh from Austin Psych Fest). Expect a night of psychedelic shoegazy indie rock goodness!

3. KPSU Presents: The KPSU Kruise 2!
Where: Portland Spirit
How Much: $10/$15
When: Friday, May 10th – 10:30pm boarding
Why: Presented by KPSU’s 2013 Radio Revival & PSPS–hop aboard the Portland Spirit for a midnight cruise with Onuinu & Grandparents! Proceeds benefit KPSU’s efforts to bring freeform, student-run college radio back to Portland’s FM airwaves. All ages and a full bar for those 21+. Tickets available online or call 503-224-3900

What’s Going On: 04/24 – 05/01

1. Palma Violets w/ Guards & Eidolons
Where: Holocene
How Much: $10/$12
When: Thursday, April 25th – 9pm
Why: London-based quartet, Palma Violets, have carved a name for themselves across the pond and it’s only a matter of time before they do the same here in the States. Their sound evokes the similar feeling of urgency you get from a cocktail of Kings of Leon and The Arcade Fire—driving, pulsating, and contagiously raucous.

2. Lil Ass Boom Box Festival
Where: Kelly’s Olympian
How Much: Free!
When: Friday, April 26th – 9pm
Why: An absolutely free mini version of Big Ass Boom Box fest with some of Portland’s finest! Catch Souvenir Driver, The Autonomics, The Century, and Outer Space Heaters. And as if one night of free music wasn’t enough, come back Saturday night with The We Shared Milk, A Happy Death, and Boing!

2b. Infected Mushroom w/ Randy Seidman & Sidestep
Where: Roseland Theater
How Much: $22.50

Why: The visual experience alone is worth the price of admission. Besides, who doesn’t love a sweaty grinder?

3. White Fang w/ Love Cop & BOOM!

Why: KPSU’s 2013 Radio Revival and Burger Records presents: White Fang with Love Cop and BOOM! After you come out of your post-brunch food coma, head to Burgerville at their Hawthorne location for an afternoon of burgers and booty shakin! Proceeds of Burgerville sales go to KPSU. Highly recommended!

1. WL w/ Soft Shadows & Fred Meyer
Where: Slabtown
How Much: $5
When: Wednesday, March 6th, 9pm
Why: WL is Misty Mary (bass, vocals), Stevie Sparks (drums) and Michael Yun (guitar). WL released a single on Death Party records last year (“Impermanent” b/w No Escape). Come check out the blissful grunge flowergaze vibes–you won’t be disappointed.

2. KPSU Presents: Tiger House
Where: The Bing Lounge
How Much: Free!
When: Thursday, March 7th – 8pm
Why: KPSU and College Music Series present: the energetic love pop quartet, Tiger House! It is a FREE all ages show, just be one of the first 150 people to RSVP to becca@binglounge.com. Delicious free beer will be provided by Lagunita’s Brewing Company (21+ of course).

3. Leaves Russell w/ No Kind of Rider and Josh & Mer

1. KPSU Presents: Onuinu
Where: The Bing Lounge
How Much: Free w/ RSVP
When: Wednesday, August 29th – 7pm
Why: An intimate evening in-studio session with buzzbuilder Onuinu. Free with RSVP (details for RSVPing here) , all ages, and free beer provided by Lagunita’s Brewing Company (for those 21+, obviously). Unfortunately there are only 150 spots, so hop to it! In the likely event that it’s at capacity, grab some friends, drink some beers and stream the show live in the comfort of your own home. 

2. Superfest 4!
Where: Crystal Ballroom, Backspace, PSU Park Blocks
How Much: $20/weekend pass
When: Thursday, August 30th – Sunday, September 2nd
Why: Think of the best dance party you’ve ever been to. Got it? Now picture that lasting four days and then maybe you’ll have a little taste of what Superfest 4 will be like. This all-ages DIY music festival and benefit for Music in the Schools is bringing you an electronic dance party with some of the best local talent around. 3. Ty Segall w/ The Memories

Why: The unstoppable Bay Area wunderkind sneaks in and out of town before MFNW this year, so catch him while you can. Oh yeah, he’s been on tour pretty much the entire time. Grab your tickets, they won’t last.

1. The Woolen Men w/ Bugs & Lame Drivers
Where: Record Room
How Much: $3-$5
When: Thursday, August 23rd – 8:30pm
Why: Returning from their West Coast tour in support of their self-titled July release, The Woolen Men are finishing up a couple last dates in Portland and Seattle. With Brooklyn power-pop tourmates Lame Drivers and Portland pop-punk duo The Bugs, you’re not going to want to miss this one. Bring some extra dollars for merch and beers (or wine, Record Room serves both!)

2. Night Beats w/ TBA
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $10
When: Friday, August 24th – 9pm
Why: Blistering garage-psych trio from Seattle, Night Beats are a must-see act. Frontman Lee Blackwell’s blues-laced guitar stylings threaten to trigger a fuzzed-out explosion that will leave your eyes and ears in a psychedelic whirlwind. In 2012, just a few short weeks after releasing their debut EP, the band was picked up by Chicago’s Trouble in Mind Records who later put out their full-length album. I highly adding both to your collection.

3. KPSU Kruise w/ Unknown Mortal Orchestra & Radiation City
Where: Portland Spirit
How Much: $20
When: Sunday, August 26th – 10:30pm boarding time
Why: Two rad bands for an even radder cause – proceeds benefit KPSU, the student-run radio station at Portland State University, toward obtaining a Low Power FM License. Upcoming: KPSU KRUISE 08/26/2012

On Sunday, August 26, ELEVEN PDX, KPSU, PSPS and Google+ are teaming up for the KPSU KRUISE 2012. It will be a memorable night on the Portland Spirit (boat) featuring two of Portland’s finest budding bands, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Radiation City.

What’s Going On: 02/22 – 02/29

1. KPSU & PSPS Presents: Grandparents w/ Broken Water 
Where: Food For Thought Cafe
How Much: $5/$7
When: Thursday, February 23rd—8pm
Why: One of Portland’s finest up and coming shoegazy psych bands serves up their sound with a side of garage and krautrock. Joining them is Olympia’s Broken Water whose reverb-drenched psychedelic garage jams are second to none. Only $5 for students (with ID) and $7 for non-students. Good times are sure to be had!

2. Quasi w/ Young Prisms & Stay Calm
Where: Mississippi
How Much: $10/$12
When: Friday, February 24th—9pm
Why: This indie rock duo needs no explanation, but you’re really in for a treat with this rad line-up! San Francisco’s Young Prisms are a psych beach-pop five-piece and Stay Calm is the collaboration of Claudia Meza (Explode Into Colors), Zac Pennington (Parenthetical Girls, Xiu Xiu), and Joe Kelly (formerly of Panther and 31 Knots). Get there!

3. Hornet Leg w/ K-Tel ’79 & Hurry Up
Where: Valentine’s
How Much: Free
When: Sunday, February 26th—9pm
Why: If you haven’t seen Hornet Leg, shame on you! But really, Valentine’s is my favorite place to see this primitive rock’n’roll trio. Also on the evening’s roster is K-Tel79’ with members formerly of Best Supporting Actress and Cat Fancy! Continuing in the trio-themed evening is Hurry Up, featuring Westin Glass and Kathy Foster of The Thermals.

What’s Going On: 5/4 – 5/11

1.  Battles / 1939 Ensemble
-Where:  Doug Fir
-How Much:  $15 (21+)
-When:  Tonight!  May 4th
-Why:  Experimental/math rock supergroup based in New York City.  Expect to see drummer John Stanier (formerly of Helmet) jump out of his seat!  Stanier believes the ride cymbal is generally overused, so he has his set up high to make more of an effort to play it.  Expect to hear these rock visionaries play much of their upcoming release, Glass Drop, due out next month.
