1. Built To Spill w/ Finn Riggins

When: Thursday & Friday Jan 31th & Feb 1st – 9pm
Why: Get up close and personal with Boise, Idaho’s tastiest export. Obviously these shows are going to sell out, but maybe with a little bit of luck (read: if you get your lazy butt there early) you might be able to snag a ticket. With two chances to see these indie rock giants–and fellow Idahoans, Finn Riggins–you’re not going to want to miss yours.
2. Bath Party w/ Wire Eyes & Lunar Grave

Why: So you couldn’t make it to the Built To Spill show–have no fear, Bath Party is here to save the day (well, night). For a fifth of the price of a BTS ticket you can treat your ears to some psychedelic surf rock and instrumental psych Krautrock (Lunar Grave). You know the drill–if you wanna get down, you’ve got to get there early!
3. Black Prairie w/ Houndstooth

Why: It’s not news that this experimental bluegrass side project contains several (three to be exact) members of The Decemberists. It may, however, be news to you that the seamless six-piece features Annalisa Tornfelt, who I hear has a knack for blowing people away with her Stroh Violin. It’s an odd Romanian instrument that amplifies the violin with an attached horn, creating a Victrola effect–definitely something to see and hear in person.

Why: Spend your night eating a delicious sandwich (I highly recommend the Pork Belly Cubano), playing some pinball, and then seeing one of your favorite Portland bands in an intimate setting. Get there early for to get a decent seat and that scrumptious aforementioned sandwich.
2. Typhoon w/ Wild Ones & The Morals

Why: Well doesn’t this sound like a fantastic evening? Kicking off with The Morals, the lovely Wild Ones, and ringing in the New Year with a room full of your friends and Typhoon? Sounds good to me. Show up late and you might not get in at all! Mississippi Studios will definitely be a full house!
3. Lost Lander w/ Aan & Dana Buoy

1. The Babies w/ Houndstooth & Campfires

Why: Formed in 2009, The Babies feature Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls) and Kevin Morby (Woods). Hot on the heels of the quartet’s second full-length, Our House on the Hill, the band embarked on a supporting tour. The album is full of three-chord garage-pop gems, highlighted by the vocals of both Ramone and Morby.
2. Federale w/ Pt. Juncture WA & The Shivas
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $10
When: Friday, November 30th – 9pm
Why: An album release celebration with Spaghetti Western soundtrack purveyors Federale. Their third studio release, The Blood Flowed Like Wine, features vocals from The Black Angel’s Alex Maas and KP Thomas of Spindrift, and retains the signature operatic vocals, blasting trumpets, and twangy reverbed guitars.
3. Battleme w/ My Goodness & The Ax
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: $10/$12

Why: Battleme is the moniker of Matt Drenik (Lions), who relocated to Portland a couple years ago to work solely on this project. You probably remember him from this years MFNW or Seattle’s Capital Hill Block Party– a mix of post-modern rock and soul with powerful hooks and falsetto vocals.

1. Those Darlins w/ Heavy Cream & Dont

Why: Post-election hangover party with Nashville’s rock’n'roll trio, Those Darlins! Whether your side won or not, wash it all away with these young and talented ladies and gentleman. In the spirit of The Ramones, each lady in the band took on the surname Darlin and with the addition of Linwood Regenburg behind the kit, their albums are only matched by their live show. Get there early for fellow Nashville all-girl quartet, Heavy Cream. You’ll only be sorry if you miss it.
2. Bath Party w/ Lunge & Young Dad

Why: Portland’s Bath Party is the latest to hop on board the Cassingle and Loving It Records train. Those ladies at Record Room sure do have good taste, and this three-piece sure does know how to kick out the psychedelic surf jams. I dare you to try and not dance (actually don’t do that, you might explode from all the pent up dance moves). Did I mention this dance party is free? That gives you plenty of extra dough to purchase some vinyl and cassettes from the store’s eclectic inventory.
3. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion w/ Quasi
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $15/$18
When: Monday ,November 12th – 9pm
Why: What’s already sure to be an amazing night with legendary New York trio The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, has just gotten better with the Portland’s own Quasi opening up the evening. Out on the road supporting their first studio album in eight years, JSBX still possess the stamina of the twentysomethings they were back in the 90s. After taking a small break from performing, the trio reunited in 2010 and haven’t looked back since. Word on the street is that they still produce energetic sweat-drenched shows.
