1. Banana Stand Media & ELEVEN PDX Present: Grandparents w/ Still Caves & Paper Brain

2.  School of Rock: Best of Portland 2

Why:  Portland teens play local jams with local heroes! All proceeds go to benefit Music in the Schools and PROWUS Music Scholarships. 3. The Walkmen w/ Father John Misty

Why: At first glance it seems a little pricy when you’re used to shelling out $5-$15 to see bands around town, but big time national touring acts are gonna cost ya. Truly a heck of a deal to get two talented acts–for the price of one! If you haven’t seen the video for Father John Misty’s “Hollywood Forever Cemetery”, you should.

What’s Going On: 08/22 – 08/29

1. The Woolen Men w/ Bugs & Lame Drivers
Where: Record Room
How Much: $3-$5
When: Thursday, August 23rd – 8:30pm
Why: Returning from their West Coast tour in support of their self-titled July release, The Woolen Men are finishing up a couple last dates in Portland and Seattle. With Brooklyn power-pop tourmates Lame Drivers and Portland pop-punk duo The Bugs, you’re not going to want to miss this one. Bring some extra dollars for merch and beers (or wine, Record Room serves both!)

2. Night Beats w/ TBA
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $10
When: Friday, August 24th – 9pm
Why: Blistering garage-psych trio from Seattle, Night Beats are a must-see act. Frontman Lee Blackwell’s blues-laced guitar stylings threaten to trigger a fuzzed-out explosion that will leave your eyes and ears in a psychedelic whirlwind. In 2012, just a few short weeks after releasing their debut EP, the band was picked up by Chicago’s Trouble in Mind Records who later put out their full-length album. I highly adding both to your collection.

3. KPSU Kruise w/ Unknown Mortal Orchestra & Radiation City
Where: Portland Spirit
How Much: $20
When: Sunday, August 26th – 10:30pm boarding time
Why: Two rad bands for an even radder cause – proceeds benefit KPSU, the student-run radio station at Portland State University, toward obtaining a Low Power FM License. Upcoming: KPSU KRUISE 08/26/2012

On Sunday, August 26, ELEVEN PDX, KPSU, PSPS and Google+ are teaming up for the KPSU KRUISE 2012. It will be a memorable night on the Portland Spirit (boat) featuring two of Portland’s finest budding bands, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Radiation City.

1. 13 Months of Sunshine: African Sounds Dance Party

Why:  Every month, Holocene proudly presents an eclectic evening featuring emerging African dance music from all over the world. This month they are showcasing the talented Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang. Hailing from Sierra Leone, Ahmed Janka Nabay modernized Bubu music with ancient-inspired frantically-paced electro-dance beats that will not fall deafly on your ears.

2. PDX Pop! Now 2012
Where: Refuge PDX

When: Friday – Sunday, July 20th – 22nd
Why: It’s time for the annual free all ages weekend of delicious local talent. Put on by the hardworking and amazing volunteers of our fair city, this year is shaping up to be one for the books. 3. King Tuff w/ Jaill & The Memories

Why: Supporting his fantastic self-titled sophomore effort on Sub Pop, King Tuff (aka Kyle Thomas) steps up his game with one of the best albums released so far this year. King Tuff’s producer, Bobby Harlow, says it best: “King Tuff should not be inspected or even listened to with critical ears. Cut your ears off. Rock & roll is meant to be blasted into your cells, penetrated, and absorbed. It’s a visceral experience.” Indeed.

What’s Going On 05/09 – 05/16

1. Ketamines w/ Night Beats, Cosmonauts & PinkSlime
Where: East End
How Much: $8
When: Wednesday, May 9th – 9pm
Why: Dubbed as a Calgary supergroup, Ketamines was formed from the demise of Myelin Sheaths and Endangered Ape. The energetic psych-pop will leave your head spinning for days with their infectious hooks. Seattle’s best psych trio, Night Beats, have new material to share as well as the mind-numbing tunes from their self-titled released last year. Cosmonauts, hailing from Fullerton, CA bring the fuzzed-out primitive garage rock and newcomers PinkSlime will give them all a run for their money.

2. Willamette Week Presents: Best New Band 2012
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: Free!
When: Friday, May 11th – 8pm
Why: Featuring Willamette Week’s Best New Band of 2012: Radiation City! After taking 12th place last year, Rad City soars to the top and takes home the title with a whopping 165 points. This not-to-miss show also includes runner ups Pure Bathing Culture and Onuinu (4th place, respectively). Get their early to secure your spot, this free show will fill up fast! 3. Beach Fossils w/ Mac DeMarco & White Fang

When: Saturday, May 12th – 10pm
Why: Formed by Dustin Payseur in 2009, Brooklyn’s Beach Fossils have undergone plenty of line-up changes while constantly touring in their three years of existence. With a solid and devoted fanbase throughout the country, the self-titled debut immediately received favorable reviews in 2010 and the band continued the success with 2011′s What a Pleasure EP. Their dreamy summertime jams will make you yearn for those long lying-on-a-blanket-in-the-park kinda days.

Why: As if you really need an excuse to hit up this annual rock’n’roll bash, but this just may be the last Bender as there are rumors of Slabtown being sold. In true Bender fashion, the line-up this year is solid: Wreckless Eric, Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds, Trashies, TacocaT, Chuck and the Chuckleberries, and many more!

2. Superfresh 3: Revenge of the Synth!

When: Friday-Saturday, February 3rd & 4th
Why: You know why! Catch the synthiest Portland bands around! Featuring:  Radiation City, Brainstorm, Wampire, Strategy, Operative, Tunnels, Truckasauras, Jonny X and the Groadies, and more! 3. Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra w/ Total Life

Why: If you’re not feeling up for either of the above, I highly suggest checking out this experimental rock band out of Montreal. Formed by Godspeed! You Black Emperor musicians Efrim Menuck, Sophie Trudeau, and Thierry Amar the band is seen as a separate entity rather than an offshoot of GYBE.

1.  School of Rock and PDX Pop Now! Present:  Best of Portland

Why:  Local teens playing the best tunes from the best local bands like YACHT, Purple Rhinestone Eagle, and Horse Feathers. Joining the kids on stage will be members of:  Typhoon, Radiation City, Menomena, M. Ward, The Thermals, and more! Proceeds go to benefit PDX Pop Now! and PROWUS Music Scholarships!

2.  Forest Park Record Release w/ Your Rival & Duck Little Brother Duck
Where:  Mississippi Studios

When:  Saturday, January 14th—7pm
Why:  The captivating vocals of Maya Kiko Stoner and Katherine Paul should be enticing enough to get you to this anticipated record release. It might be a chilly winter evening, but once the dynamic guitars and slow-building yet powerful drums fall on your ears you’ll have no problem warming up. [If you need more Forest Park, they also play Friday the 13th w/ members of Typhoon and Like A Villain, as well as performances by Aan and Youth]

3.  Thee Cormans, Cécilia Und Die Sauerkrauts, Thee Headliners & Chemicals

1.  Gay Ghost w/ Pheasant & Towering Trees

Why:  Emerging alt-rock pop trio Gay Ghost are currently working on their first proper release with producer/engineer Michael Miew and is due out sometime early next year. Show up early for Pheasant & Towering Trees!

2.  Log Across The Washer w/ The We Shared Milk
Where:  Kelly’s Olympian

When:  Friday, December 30th –9pm
Why:  You may have been lucky enough to catch them last month as one of Into The Woods’ quarterly featured artists. Multi-instrumentalist Tyler Keene (formerly of And And And) says this is the first time he’s tried making electronic music with complete sincerity.

3.  Nurses w/ Radiation City, Wild Ones & DJ Beyonda

1. Tender Loving Empire Compilation Release Party!

Why: Radiation City, Brainstorm, Finn Riggins, E*Rock, Adventures! With Might are the talented musicians featured in the fourth edition of Tender Loving Empire’s annual compilation of local music. Get there early and receive a FREE hand silk-screen copy of the comp!

2. The Reservations w/ Nucular Aminals and Hooded Hags

When: Friday, November 4 – 9pm
Why: You know him as the dark and crooning baritone frontman of The Reservations and Mattress–Rex Marshall. So why not help this dapper young gentleman age gracefully while rocking out to some of Portland’s finest rock’n’roll?

3. Real Estate w/ Big Troubles
