What’s Going On: 05/15 – 05/22

1. The Black Angels w/ Hanni El Khatib & Wall of Death
Where: Wonder Ballroom
How Much: $18
When: Wednesday, May 15th – 8pm
Why: Hot off the heels of performing and curating the 6th Austin Psych Fest, The Black Angels continue on tour in support of their fourth full-length album, Indigo Meadow. You can expect a healthy mix of old and new, swirling psychedelic lights and sounds, and reverbed-drenched guitars.

2. Steve Adamyk w/ Needles//Pins & Youthbitch
Where: The Know
How Much: $5
When: Thursday, May 16th – 8pm
Why: Inspired by 70′s punk, 80′s power pop, and 90′s garage rock, this Ottawa four-piece kicks out the trash-pop jams and they kick ‘em out hard. With Vancouver’s Needles//Pins and Portland’s Youthbitch you can bet your sweet ass you’ll be shimmying and shakin all night long!

3. The Shivas w/ The Beets, Older Women & Awkward Energy
Where: Record Room
How Much: $6
When: Sunday, May 19th – 8pm
Why: It’s a no-brainer, kids! The Shivas have one last show before heading out on a month-long tour with The Dandy Warhols, so come out and show ‘em some love! You won’t want to miss The Beets either! Representing Jackson Heights, NY, the trio features minimalistic drumming, a healthy dose of reverb, and vocals by all three members.

4. Black Moth Super Rainbow w/ The Hood Internet
Where: Hawthorne Theater
How Much: $15/$18
When: Tuesday, May 21st – 7pm
Why: Chicago mash-up royalty The Hood Internet are a phenomenal stand-alone act, but the fact that their set will be followed by Pittsburgh’s synthiest Black Moth Super Rainbow means that you will be transported to another plane of festival-like exuberance, even if it’s only for a few hours.

What’s Going On: 01/30 – 02/06

1. Built To Spill w/ Finn Riggins
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $25
When: Thursday & Friday Jan 31th & Feb 1st – 9pm
Why: Get up close and personal with Boise, Idaho’s tastiest export. Obviously these shows are going to sell out, but maybe with a little bit of luck (read: if you get your lazy butt there early) you might be able to snag a ticket. With two chances to see these indie rock giants–and fellow Idahoans, Finn Riggins–you’re not going to want to miss yours.

2. Bath Party w/ Wire Eyes & Lunar Grave
Where: The Know
How Much: $5
When: Friday, February 1st – 8pm
Why: So you couldn’t make it to the Built To Spill show–have no fear, Bath Party is here to save the day (well, night). For a fifth of the price of a BTS ticket you can treat your ears to some psychedelic surf rock and instrumental psych Krautrock (Lunar Grave). You know the drill–if you wanna get down, you’ve got to get there early!

3. Black Prairie w/ Houndstooth
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: $15
When: Saturday, February 2nd – 9pm
Why: It’s not news that this experimental bluegrass side project contains several (three to be exact) members of The Decemberists. It may, however, be news to you that the seamless six-piece features Annalisa Tornfelt, who I hear has a knack for blowing people away with her Stroh Violin. It’s an odd Romanian instrument that amplifies the violin with an attached horn, creating a Victrola effect–definitely something to see and hear in person.
