The Men @ Mississippi Studios 6/23/2012

What a way to kick off the summer—the evening began with two ripping sets from Hausu and Hurry Up, and by 11pm the room was filled with the stench of campfire and testosterone. Not quite a sold out show, it left some wiggle room for more people to filter in as the New York foursome took the stage. The energetic, heavy, punk/post-hardcore quartet opened with some crowd-pleasing tunes from 2011’s Leave Home which definitely got the fans going—specifically the male crowd (the men outnumbered the ladies in attendance 10:1), who showed their love and appreciation with a sweaty mosh pit of body slamming and beer spilling.

What’s Going On: 06/20 – 06/27

1. Tropical Popsicle w/ Elliot Tinsley & DJ Ikon
Where: Slabtown
How Much: $5
When: Wednesday, June 20th – 8:30pm
Why: In La Mesa, just outside the riffraff of San Diego, Tim Hines writes and records walls of guitar haze on a four track resulting in a deliciously layered garage-psych shoegaze cocktail. It may be an unusual name, but Tropical Popsicle is an usually good band. The quartet has played with notable bands like Beach Fossils, The Fresh & Onlys, White Fence, etc.

 2. 2:54 w/ Widowspeak
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $10/$12
When: Friday, June 22nd – 9pm
Why: Both bands on this bill are worth the ticket price separately, and $10 measly bucks is a heck of a deal for both. 2:54 is a shoegaze duo from the UK (although performing live as a four-piece) with melodies that will captivate your soul. Currently based out of Brooklyn, Widowspeak helped open the doors on the dream-pop resurgence with their self-titled debut released on Captured Tracks.

3. The Men w/ Hurry Up & Hausu
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: $12
When: Saturday, June 23rd – 9pm
Why: Labeled as a noise/post-punk band, this Brooklyn-based quartet recently released their third full-length album, Open Your Heart, on Sacred Bones Records. After the first track, you take a step back and ask yourself, “This is The Men?” Although it opens fast and furious, the album is filled with guitar solos (see: seven minute psychedelic, “Oscillation”), surfy riffs, and a little twang.
