1. La Luz w/ Heatwarmer & Llyod & Michael
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: $10
When: Thursday, March 6th – 9pm
Why: Passing through town on their way to a slew of shows at SXSW, Seattle’s darlings make a stop to show off their new bass player, Lena Simon. A sultry mix of surf, psych, and doo-wop, La Luz’s debut album, It’s Alive, was one of the best records out last year. These ladies are on fire and show no signs of slowing down!

2. Party Boyz Ladiez Night: Sallie Ford w/ Luz Elena Mendoza, Rebecca Gates & Swansea
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: $15
When: Friday, March 7th – 9pm
Why: Those crazy Party Boyz are at it again! This time it’s to showcase some of Portland’s amazing female talent. Featuring Sallie Ford with her brand new all-female band, Luz Elena Mendoza (of Y La Bamba), Rebecca Gates, and Swansea! It’s also International Women’s Day, so grab your favorite ladiez for one heck of a night!

2a. The Prids w/ J.C.Satàn, King Dude & Vice Device
Where: Foggy Notion
How Much:
When: Friday, March 7th – 8pm
Why: And as if you needed yet another option for Saturday, here’s one heck of a line-up that will be hard to pass up! Vice Device kicks off the night at 9pm sharp with King Dude (WA), and all the way from France, J.C.Satàn! And what’s that? The Prids are playing too? Have mercy!

3. A Happy Death w/ Just Lions & Bubble Cats
Where: The Firkin Tavern
How Much: $5
When: Saturday, March 8th – 9pm
Why: With only $5 at the door, you’ll have plenty of cash to enjoy some delicious brews while you’re enjoying some of your favorite Portland bands! A Happy Death with Just Lions and Bubble Cats! Fundraiser for PALS Fest 2014! Get thee to The Firkin!

Why: KZME Presents: Sometimes A Great Notion featuring Pinks Quieter, Pulse Emitter, White Fang, Das Fluff, and Pink Skull. Take a breather and come back Saturday night for Matthew Heller, The Maldives, Cambodian Space Project, Ken Stringfellow (of The Posies, Big Star, REM), and Rose Windows.

3. Houndstooth w/ Pearly Gate Music

Why: Houndstooth’s first full-length, Ride Out The Dark, just dropped yesterday on No Quarter Records. Do yourself a favor and check out the five-piece’s first single, “Canary Island” and then get your butt to Bunk Bar for the band’s record release show! Zach Tillman’s solo vessel, Pearly Gate Music, opens with his extraordinary vocals and melodies.

1. 13 Months of Sunshine: African Sounds Dance Party
Where: Holocene
How Much: $8
When: Wednesday, July 18th – 8:30pm
Why:  Every month, Holocene proudly presents an eclectic evening featuring emerging African dance music from all over the world. This month they are showcasing the talented Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang. Hailing from Sierra Leone, Ahmed Janka Nabay modernized Bubu music with ancient-inspired frantically-paced electro-dance beats that will not fall deafly on your ears.

2. PDX Pop! Now 2012
Where: Refuge PDX
How Much: Free
When: Friday – Sunday, July 20th – 22nd
Why: It’s time for the annual free all ages weekend of delicious local talent. Put on by the hardworking and amazing volunteers of our fair city, this year is shaping up to be one for the books. Acts you shouldn’t miss: 1939 Ensemble, Aan, AU, Charts, Grandparents, Hausu, Jeffrey Jerusalem, K-Tel ’79, Old Wars, Onuinu, The Parson Redheads, Pure Bathing Culture, Radiation City, Sean Flinn & The Royal We, The Shivas, Son of Huns, White Fang, XDS, and Youthbitch.

3. King Tuff w/ Jaill & The Memories
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $10/$12
When: Monday, July 23rd – 9pm
Why: Supporting his fantastic self-titled sophomore effort on Sub Pop, King Tuff (aka Kyle Thomas) steps up his game with one of the best albums released so far this year. King Tuff’s producer, Bobby Harlow, says it best: “King Tuff should not be inspected or even listened to with critical ears. Cut your ears off. Rock & roll is meant to be blasted into your cells, penetrated, and absorbed. It’s a visceral experience.” Indeed.

1. Boom Chick w/ Root Jack
Where: Dante’s
How Much: $5
When: Thursday, October 20 – 9pm
Why: If you’re still sad about The White Stripes calling it quits, dry those eyes and get ready for this Brooklyn-based duo. Yes, we’ll never tire of the guitar and drum mash-up, but Boom Chick exudes bluesy rock’n’roll to perhaps it’s finest.

2. Blouse w/ Vice Device
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: $5/$7
When: Friday, October 21 – 9pm
Why: Portland has found a sparkling gem, and her name is Charlie Hilton. On the brink of their self-titled debut on Captured Tracks, Blouse is dream-pop trio we won’t soon forget. Wispy and atmospheric, the music penetrates through your heart and into your soul.

3. Fruit Bats w/ Parson Red Heads
Where: Doug Fir Lounge
How Much: $15
When: Saturday, October 22 – 9pm
Why: Touring in support of their fifth album, Tripper, Eric Johnson and Co. make a stop home for an evening of melodious storytelling tunes. Joining them are the harmonious Parson Red Heads. Bandmates and friends, the indie-folk group has been playing together since their teens.
