This Weekend, Starting Now!
It’s always a busy time for arts and entertainment here in The Pacific Northwest. This weekend is not only the Autumnal Equinox, but also one of those special times when a lot of amazing events line up and it’s hard to choose (poor us). If you’re looking for something to do, here are some sure bets.
A dance party in a horror-themed bar, a visual history lesson set to music, a road trip leading to a music festival on the beach, witches singing in a church, guitars and glitter in a rock-n-roll sandwich shoppe, and another “cirque” show in town.
Thursday, September 21st
Public Service Broadcasting at Wonder Ballroom
Public Servic Broadcasting hit the radio waves when there single “Go” off their album Race For Space was released. All of their albums, (Inform Educate Entertain, Race For Space, and Every Valley) are mostly instrumental, and their music videos and live shows are highly visual, creating a soundtrack for glimpses into history over the last century. It’s a look at the biggest achievements, changes, and past propaganda, including cosmonauts, scaling Mt. Everest, changes in fashion, and the effects of the mining industry. Shadowplay 11th Anniversary at the Lovecraft.
For eleven years now, DJ Carrion has taken over Thursday nights and turned them into a dark dance party called Shadowplay. Inside the horror themed Lovecraft, this means dancing among lasers and maybe sipping some absinthe next to a giant Cthulhu. (event page)

Skull Diver/Childspeak/Kulululu at Bunk Bar

Lenore. And Edna Vasquez at The Old Church
The Old Church is a beautiful venue for witch-folk. Edna Vasquez is a soulful storyteller through mariachi, and this show also celebrates the self-titled, self-released album by duo Rebecca Miller and Joy Pearson as Lenore. The tingles induced by the instrumentation and harmonies of these performances are sure to be spellbinding. (event page)
Saturday, September 23rd
Stackstock Music Fest
Taking place in the Haystack Gardens in Cannon Beach, the first incarnation of this beach-town festival includes some of the best up-and-coming and established Oregon artists. Again we have Edna Vasquez, with new band Cardioid, Pure Bathing Culture, Ages and Ages, and Colin McCoy of The Decemberists, all paired with Public Coast Brewing and walking distance to the ocean. Angamazad Hosted by Fox & Beggar Theatre and The Alberta Abbey
An exotic love story adapted from the 1,001 Arabian nights, fusing elements of cirque, musical theater, and spoken word. There will be performances on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but Angamazad: The Afterparty is post-performance on Saturday, when The Fox & Beggar Theater takes over the entire Alberta Abbey for an epic dance party.
