Show Preview: Julia Holter at Holocene (2/2)
Los Angeles-based songstress Julia Holter brings her tour behind last year’s excellent Have You In My Wilderness to town tonight (2/2) at Holocene (get tickets here), in what promises to be a captivating evening of textural art pop. Holter continued her intriguing evolution on Have You In My Wilderness, eschewing the process employed on previous albums where she used a source material for inspiration — Virginia Wolfe, ancient Greek plays — instead building a series of songs about love, possession and relationships that stand on their own.
As with her last record Loud City Songs, Holter left the bedroom recording feel of her first two albums behind, and she and producer Cole Marsden Greif-Neill instead formulating the songs in a more direct fashion, with Holter’s vocals at the fore. The result is an album that retains the mysterious, dream-like haze of Holter’s previous work, while showcasing her ample abilities as a storyteller.
Haley Fohr’s Circuit Des Yeux project opens the show, which promises to be an enthralling night of dreamy art pop. Tickets are $15 at the door.
