What’s Going On: 06/20 – 06/27
1. Tropical Popsicle w/ Elliot Tinsley & DJ Ikon
Where: Slabtown
How Much: $5
When: Wednesday, June 20th – 8:30pm
Why: In La Mesa, just outside the riffraff of San Diego, Tim Hines writes and records walls of guitar haze on a four track resulting in a deliciously layered garage-psych shoegaze cocktail. It may be an unusual name, but Tropical Popsicle is an usually good band. The quartet has played with notable bands like Beach Fossils, The Fresh & Onlys, White Fence, etc.
2. 2:54 w/ Widowspeak
Where: Doug Fir
How Much: $10/$12
When: Friday, June 22nd – 9pm
Why: Both bands on this bill are worth the ticket price separately, and $10 measly bucks is a heck of a deal for both. 2:54 is a shoegaze duo from the UK (although performing live as a four-piece) with melodies that will captivate your soul. Currently based out of Brooklyn, Widowspeak helped open the doors on the dream-pop resurgence with their self-titled debut released on Captured Tracks.
3. The Men w/ Hurry Up & Hausu
Where: Mississippi Studios
How Much: $12
When: Saturday, June 23rd – 9pm
Why: Labeled as a noise/post-punk band, this Brooklyn-based quartet recently released their third full-length album, Open Your Heart, on Sacred Bones Records. After the first track, you take a step back and ask yourself, “This is The Men?” Although it opens fast and furious, the album is filled with guitar solos (see: seven minute psychedelic, “Oscillation”), surfy riffs, and a little twang.
