Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile @ The Schnitz 10/20/2017
Be still my beating indie heart! Hasn’t it been a long time since we had a good old fashioned super group? Ok, this is more of a duo – but even the cynical Pichfork-ites are excited to hear Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile sing about writing songs and croon each other’s tunes.
From their recently released album ‘Lotta Sea Lice,’ you can imagine their clandestine meeting and eventual friendship through lines like:
‘I cherish my intercontinental friendships
We talk it over continental breakfast
In a hotel in East Bumble-wherever
Somewhere on the sphere, around here’
As I listen to the album, I like to imagine I am a fly on the wall, in a grungy diner somewhere in America. Maybe they just played the same festival, maybe they happened to be in town at the same time – however they met, they seem to be able to connect somewhere in the middle of their musical spheres, like a perfect Venn diagram. It will be fascinating to see how this translates to stage banter during Friday’s show at the Schnitz. Don’t miss this tour – it may be a once in a lifetime David Byrne / St.Vincent sort of affair.
