goste is the brainchild of Brooklyn producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Owen Ross, and in December the project released it’s third record, a six song EP entitled Eugene.  Eugene is a beguilingly unique collection of songs that sees Ross at an interesting crossroads between traditionally-structured folk and blues music with more experimental electronic sounds.

A lot of the music on Eugene could be described as organic electronic music, as although Ross employs a computer and samples on the EP, he also backed by a live band throughout the record. The resulting sound is a diverse and ominous one that’s displayed very nicely on tracks like the record’s dark and driving lead single “Loadedlikeapistol” and the bluesy dirge of “Won’t Be Long”.

Ross is a Berklee College of Music graduate, and his wide-ranging musical knowledge and talents are apparent throughout the record. The unique blend of sounds of Eugene recalls other genre-defying rock acts like alt-j and perhaps a slowed-down version of Jose Gonzalez’s Junip project.

At times Eugene meanders a bit, something that is perhaps to be expected from a new act that incorporates as many genres as goste does. Overall however, the record is a very enjoyable listen that has as many disparate influences as Ross’ NYC home, and one that makes goste a project to keep your eye on.
