After over 17 years, Poison The Well finally returned to Portland on April 7, 2025, this time on their tour celebrating 25 years of their debut album The Opposite of December… A Season of Separation. Playing the landmark metalcore album in full, the night was one of cathartic nostalgia. Poison The Well didn’t end there, though — in addition to anthems from The Opposite of December, they added eight favorites from their later albums as well as their newest single “Trembling Level” for a complete setlist of 18 songs.

Teenage Wrist, Los Angeles-based alternative rock band, and hardcore punk band Better Lovers, from Buffalo, New York, joined Poison The Well on tour and opened the evening alongside local hardcore band Tolls.

While I was initially disappointed that Glassjaw, a supporting band on the majority of the tour with Poison The Well, wouldn’t be at the Portland date, I was happy to see that they enlisted the support of a local band. And Tolls, with their harsh vocals and heavy breakdowns, were a great choice. The influence of the headlining act, a band many consider influential in the modern metalcore scene, could clearly be felt in their music. Fans who arrived early showed their enjoyment as well — starting the mosh pit and hardcore dancing right away.

Following Tolls, Teenage Wrist offered a break from the intensity with their melodic and emotional set, one that nonetheless captivated the audience and commanded their attention.

Better Lovers brought the energy and intensity back up. Vocalist Greg Puciato entered the stage jumping and never let down, ending their set by crowdsurfing during their finale of “30 Under 13”, their first single released as a band in 2023.

By the time Poison The Well took to the stage, the crowd was primed and ready. Moshers took full advantage of the spacious venue floor while others packed the balcony full, watching the chaos from above. The band kept the crowd on their toes in anticipation, too — while they started the set with the first two songs from The Opposite of December, “12/23/93” and “A Wish For Things That Work”, they veered from the album order afterwards, playing You Come Before You’s “Ghostchant” and Tear From The Red’s “Botchla”. They continued to oscillate between later hits and songs from The Opposite of December before ending with the album’s most popular anthem, “Nerdy”. Vocalist Jeffrey Moreira met the crowd at the barricade and pointed the mic as the crowd screamed with him: “I just want to feel this way forever” — we may not be able to feel it forever, but just for a night, those of us in the crowd at the Poison The Well show felt like we were in high school again.
