Grandaddy

Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, London, 1998

The first time I saw Grandaddy was October 29, 2000, at the Beacon Theater in New York City opening for Ellott Smith. The indie rock band was promoting their recent release, The Sophtware Slump, a synth laden, and distorted guitar album anchored by lead singer and songwriter, Jason Lytle’s lyricism and enveloping vocals. Classic songs such as the sprawling “He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot” and “Hewlett’s Daughter”, a lovesick ballad, incorporate folk and Americana while masterfully echoing concerns about technology and its effects on the looming millennium.

This year, the band returns with a tour playing the album in its entirety and celebrating 25 years since its release.

Grandaddy play Revolution Hall Saturday, September 20 (sold out) and Sunday, September 21.
