Show Preview: CHAI at Holocene
The members of CHAI may embrace cuteness in their music, but they also pack a big punch. By embodying “kawaii” — Japanese “cute-culture” — Mana, Kana, Yuna, and Yuki are critiquing and throwing out old ideals of patriarchal society. This concept of “Neo-Kawaii” comes out strongly in their newly released second album, “PUNK” with songs like “GREAT JOB” and “CHOOSE GO!”
Taking off like a rocket, CHAI released their first album — “PINK” — in 2015 and were quickly signed to Sony Music Entertainment (Japan). In 2017, Burger Records reached out to the four-piece band, including them on 2017’s Burger World: Japan Compilation cassette. While the band says they are heavily influenced by Basement Jaxx, Jamiroquai, Gorillaz, and CSS, CHAI have a pop sound that is completely their own. With brilliant, bright music videos and catchy hooks, the group puts on a spectacular live show equipped with bouncy dance routine, quirky little covers (ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” among others), and matching pink outfits.
So please, don’t miss your chance to see CHAI hit the stage at Holocene on March 30 with Haiku Hands and Cry Babe! Show at 5:30PM; tickets $15
